Obama Hopes that You Forget The Recent Past – Anti-War Obama Supporters Should Be Outraged

Actually, the CIC (Campaigner-In-Chief) hopes that announcing a final Iraq exit date of Q4, 2011 will give him credit for “ending the Iraq war”.  Let’s see the anti-military strategy that Obama voted for as a Senator, when he opposed the surge strategy that is now responsible for winning the war:

On March 27, 2007, Congress passed H.R. 1591, which called for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Iraq by March 2008. However, President Bush vetoed the bill and the House of Representatives failed to override the veto.[8] Congress then passed H.R. 2206, which provided funding for the Iraq War through September 30, 2007 and was signed into law by President Bush on May 25, 2007. H.R. 2206 included eighteen benchmarks for the Iraqi government to meet.[9]

On May 9, 2007, Representative Jim McGovern introduced H.R. 2237[10] to the House: "To provide for the redeployment of United States Armed Forces and defense contractors from Iraq." The bill failed with a vote of 255 to 171, thirteen of the Nays coming from Democrats representing districts won by John Kerry in 2004.[citation needed]

On July 12, 2007 the House passed H.R. 2956 by a vote of 223 to 201, for redeployment (or withdrawal) of U.S. armed forces out of Iraq. The resolution requires most troops to withdraw from Iraq by April 1, 2008.[8][11][12]

On July 18, 2007, after an all-night debate, the Senate blocked the passage of a bill that would have set a troop withdrawal timetable with a vote of 52-47. The withdrawal would have started within 120 days, and would have required that all troops (except an unspecified number could be left behind to conduct a very narrow set of missions) be out of the country by April 30, 2008.[13]

So now we are supposed to pat Obama on the back for following Bush’s plan for the conclusion of the war?  Exit by 2011 was Bush’s military leadership’s anticipation since before Obama was elected.  Obama now does not stand behind his vicious opposition to the Iraq War, which caused him to vote to entirely end it by March of 2008.  If he stood behind his actions as a Senator, then he would have begun the draw down immediately upon taking office, executing the plan that he voted for in 2007, which means that within 5 months of taking office, there would have been no troops left.  That is May of 2009.  His new plan gets all troops out by December 2011.  That’s 2 years and 7 months late, according to his plan and assertions as a Senator, in lockstep with Democrats.

Now tell me, if you were against the Iraq War and counted on Obama to end it like you wanted him to when you elected him, are you thrilled that he’s over 2.5 years late, from what he could have used his power to affect?  Are you thrilled that his “new” plan is exactly Bush’s plan?

So get off of it Obama.  Stop taking credit for something that you would’ve screwed up if you were in Bush’s shoes at the time.  And now that you’ve adopted the majority of Bush’s military strategy, be a man and admit you were wrong about Bush when you were a Senator.

And by the way, the war cost of $1 Trillion to prevent 1,000 terror attack plots per year, and avert the $multi-trillion damage to our economy from 911 (imagine a series of those) was a prudent expense, not a waste.  In your alternative scenario, we take an even greater hit to the economy by inaction and sustaining new 911-styled attacks.
